Women Empowerment need of the hour : Dr. Vishakha Tripathi

Kunda (Pratapgarh). If a woman is empowered she has the potential not only to change the society for the better but can also inspire others to make their lives meaningful. Addressing more than four thousand students in a seminar organized by Jagadguru Kripalu Mahila College, Dr, Vishakha Tripathi, President, JKP, said that empowered and stronger woman can contribute to the society more effectively. She also said that female students of rural areas should not feel less empowered than their urban counterparts as they too have the same rights and same laws to protect them. The seminar was orgaised as a part of the Annual Prize Distribution ceremony of JKP Education.

Talking about the steps being taken by the UP Government for Women Security, Sutapa Sanyal, Additional Director General of Police said that it’s the vision of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav that is making the state a safe place for women. Speaking as the Chief Guest in a seminar on Women Empowerment organized by Jagadguru Kripalu Mahila Mahavidyalaya here, Sutapa Sanyal said that a special cell by the name of Mahila Samman Prakoshth has been constituted on the directives of the Chief Minister and it is working round the clock to provide adequate safety to women all over the state. Elaborating on the instruments and interventions being undertaken for Women empowerment Sutapa Sanyal said that facility for making online complaints has been made available to women and very soon the department would engage women from both rural and urban areas as citizen cadets to monitor violence against women effectively. Addressing over four thousand students across various schools of Kunda, Sanyal described the present age as Information, Communication and Entertainment or in short ICE age and said that young women and students should be very careful in using the modern means of technology and social media. Advising the school authorities to appoint trained counselors to interact with adolescent students, she asked the students to remain aware of their rights and laws.

Speaking at the seminar, Pawan Rana, Director, ERA said that Government, Civil Society and NGOs must come together to stop gender discrimination and crime against women. Anupama Singh of Anupama Foundation advocated stern punishment for crimes like female foeticide. Manisha Bhatia of Action Aid demanded change in school curriculums to include subjects that would make the female students aware of their rights and laws.

Preceding the seminar, Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat Education organized an award ceremony to honor the top three performing students of each class for academic achievement. Awards were given to 22 Primary School students, 27 Intermediate College students and 36 Degree College students. The Intermediate College consists of four houses, Ganga House, Yamuna House, Kaveri House and Godavari House. This year,Yamuna House was awarded the prize for the Best House. Chief Guest Sutapa Sanyal and Vishakha Tripathi, President, Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat Education gave away the awards. The Award Ceremony was followed by cultural program which included beautiful dance on Ganesh Vandana by the students of Degree College, followed by an emotionally moving and inspiring skit on Save the Girl Child by the Intermediate College students. The students, teachers and staff of JKPE, the students, teachers and of 60 other schools in the surrounding vicinity attended the event. Manager of the school Rajneesh Puri gave the vote of thanks.

Bestowed with Rajeev Gandhi Global Excellence Award, Mother Teresa Award and recently with Nelson Mandela Award for exemplary work in the field of girl education, Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat Education imparts free education to more than  five thousand girls from pre primary to post graduate level through institutions located in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. In addition to receiving free education, students receive free transportation, including free distribution of bicycles to those students who travel long distances, along with free distribution of uniforms, school bags, and other school-related requirements, with the aim of removing any obstacle to the girl’s education that is likely to be induced by poverty. Under the guidance of Ms Vishakha Tripathi, JKP Education has been achieving one success after the other.

The State Scores Extra High on Gaming-Friendly Industry Index

Meghalaya scored 92.85 out of 100 possible points in a Gaming Industry Index and proved to be India’s most gaming-friendly state following its recent profound legislation changes over the field allowing land-based and online gaming, including games of chance, under a licensing regime.

The index by the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) uses a scale of 0 to 100 to measure the level of legalisation on gambling and betting achieved by a state based on the scores over a set of seven different games – lottery, horse racing, betting on sports, poker, rummy, casino and fantasy sports

Starting from February last year, Meghalaya became the third state in India’s northeast to legalise gambling and betting after Sikkim and Nagaland. After consultations with the UKIBC, the state proceeded with the adoption of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 and the nullification of the Meghalaya Prevention of Gambling Act, 1970. Subsequently in December, the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021 were notified and came into force.

All for the Tourists

The move to legalise and license various forms of offline and online betting and gambling in Meghalaya is aimed at boosting tourism and creating jobs, and altogether raising taxation revenues for the northeastern state. At the same time, the opportunities to bet and gamble legally will be reserved only for tourists and visitors.

“We came out with a Gaming Act and subsequently framed the Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021. The government will accordingly issue licenses to operate games of skill and chance, both online and offline,” said James P. K. Sangma, Meghalaya State Law and Taxation Minister speaking in the capital city of Shillong. “But the legalized gambling and gaming will only be for tourists and not residents of Meghalaya,” he continued.

To be allowed to play, tourists and people visiting the state for work or business purposes will have to prove their non-resident status by presenting appropriate documents, in a process similar to a bank KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure.

Meghalaya Reaches Out to a Vast Market

With 140 millions of people in India estimated to bet regularly on sports, and a total of 370 million desi bettors around prominent sporting events, as per data from one of the latest reports by Esse N Videri, Meghalaya is set to reach out and take a piece of a vast market.

Estimates on the financial value of India’s sports betting market, combined across all types of offline channels and online sports and cricket predictions and betting platforms, speak about amounts between $130 and $150 billion (roughly between ₹9.7 and ₹11.5 lakh crore).

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Delhi are shown to deliver the highest number of bettors and Meghalaya can count on substantial tourists flow from their betting circles. The sports betting communities of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also not to be underestimated.

Among the sports, cricket is most popular, registering 68 percent of the total bet count analyzed by Esse N Videri. Football takes second position with 11 percent of the bets, followed by betting on FIFA at 7 percent and on eCricket at 5 percent. The last position in the Top 5 of popular sports for betting in India is taken by tennis with 3 percent of the bet count.

Local Citizens will Still have Their Teer Betting

Meghalaya residents will still be permitted to participate in teer betting over arrow-shooting results. Teer is a traditional method of gambling, somewhat similar to a lottery draw, and held under the rules of the Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets Act, 2018.

Teer includes bettors wagering on the number of arrows that reach the target which is placed about 50 meters away from a team of 20 archers positioned in a semicircle.

The archers shoot volleys of arrows at the target for ten minutes, and players place their bets choosing a number between 0 and 99 trying to guess the last two digits of the number of arrows that successfully pierce the target.

If, for example, the number of hits is 256, anyone who has bet on 56 wins an amount eight times bigger than their wager.
