Windies sweating on Roach injury
Centurion: West Indies have been left sweating on the fitness of frontline fast bowler Kemar Roach after he pulled up with an ankle injury during the first day of the opening Test against South Africa here.
The 26-year-old sustained an injury to his right ankle while running into bowl his 16th over, in the post-tea session at the SuperSport Park here Wednesday, as per reports.
Roach was treated on the field by physio C.J. Clark and then taken to a medical facility in Pretoria, where he underwent a MRI scan.
Team spokesman said team management was hopeful Roach would be fit to participate in the second day’s play Thursday.
Roach was the best bowler for the visitors Wednesday, finishing with two for 52 as South Africa piled up 340 for three after being sent in.
Struggling at 57 for three just after the first hour, South Africa recovered through a record 283-run fourth wicket stand between AB de Villiers who hit 141 not out and captain Hashim Amla, who scored an unbeaten 133.
The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.
Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.
Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”
Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
