Delhi Daredevils vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s six-wicket loss at home had them almost on the brink of being ousted from the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). At that point, with four do-or-die games left to play, Royal Challengers came out on top rather convincingly with massive wins on the trot by margins of 144 runs, nine wickets and 82 runs by Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method to boost their chances. However, the job is only three quarters done as they have to win their final match against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday in Raipur to seal a spot in the playoffs, knocking their opponents out of the reckoning in the process.

What their large-margin wins have done is bolster their Net Run Rate to +0.930 with no other team even close. The compressed points table means that six teams are still battling for a place in the playoffs without certainty until the last league stage game.

Virat Kohli’s extraordinary purple patch (865 runs) has had a major part to play in the wins, with the Royal Challengers captain scoring as many as four centuries in the season. One came in a losing cause, but the other three came in substantial wins. AB de Villiers, who has the third-most number of runs in this season after Kohli and David Warner with 597, has been an able accomplice in the team’s quest of sealing matches.

Chris Gayle’s return to form in the last two games has been a welcome change as Royal Challengers’ top-order now seems as lethal as ever, but their bowling continues to struggle. Chris Jordan’s inclusion hasn’t done drastic wonders for the side as he has conceded close to ten an over and has picked up five wickets in six games – four of which came against Gujarat Lions. Yuzvendra Chahal has been their only highlight. Chahal has 16 wickets in 10 matches this season at an average of 18.25.

If the same wicket that was used for the clash against Sunrisers is used, then Chahal will benefit from it as the pitch was gripping a little bit. Also, working in favour of spinners is the size of the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, that makes it hard for batsmen to clear the boundaries.

Zaheer Khan, Daredevils’ astute captain, will use his knowledge of Kohli’s approach to the game and minute nitty-gritties, with the aim to keep him in check as Daredevils themselves are bidding for a spot in the top four. Having beaten Royal Challengers at the M Chinnaswamy stadium earlier in the season, which was their first win in ten games at the venue, they would fancy their chances against Kohli’s unit.

Daredevils have had more than one stand-out performer which bodes well for the side. Their bowling, led primarily by Zaheer and Amit Mishra, has done well to restrict opponents, but their worry will lie with the batting that has been erratic. Karun Nair has recorded some consistent scores, while Chris Morris has chipped in down the order. Rishabh Pant, 18, has turned up with a few significant scores that have come at vital junctures. However, to beat Bangalore, given the menacing rampage they are on, they will need more than a couple of people standing up.

Given Royal Challengers’ inclination towards chasing, than batting first, Daredevils’ best chance would be to get their top three and expose an untested middle-order. Whether or not Daredevils will able to halt Royal Challengers’ rampage will depend highly on the conditions. There was a storm followed by a spurt of rain on the eve of the match, denying Daredevils some practice time. If the game is a washout, both teams will finish with 15 points and hope for a Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders loss – with the former playing Gujarat Lions tonight.

The State Scores Extra High on Gaming-Friendly Industry Index

Meghalaya scored 92.85 out of 100 possible points in a Gaming Industry Index and proved to be India’s most gaming-friendly state following its recent profound legislation changes over the field allowing land-based and online gaming, including games of chance, under a licensing regime.

The index by the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) uses a scale of 0 to 100 to measure the level of legalisation on gambling and betting achieved by a state based on the scores over a set of seven different games – lottery, horse racing, betting on sports, poker, rummy, casino and fantasy sports

Starting from February last year, Meghalaya became the third state in India’s northeast to legalise gambling and betting after Sikkim and Nagaland. After consultations with the UKIBC, the state proceeded with the adoption of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 and the nullification of the Meghalaya Prevention of Gambling Act, 1970. Subsequently in December, the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021 were notified and came into force.

All for the Tourists

The move to legalise and license various forms of offline and online betting and gambling in Meghalaya is aimed at boosting tourism and creating jobs, and altogether raising taxation revenues for the northeastern state. At the same time, the opportunities to bet and gamble legally will be reserved only for tourists and visitors.

“We came out with a Gaming Act and subsequently framed the Regulation of Gaming Rules, 2021. The government will accordingly issue licenses to operate games of skill and chance, both online and offline,” said James P. K. Sangma, Meghalaya State Law and Taxation Minister speaking in the capital city of Shillong. “But the legalized gambling and gaming will only be for tourists and not residents of Meghalaya,” he continued.

To be allowed to play, tourists and people visiting the state for work or business purposes will have to prove their non-resident status by presenting appropriate documents, in a process similar to a bank KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure.

Meghalaya Reaches Out to a Vast Market

With 140 millions of people in India estimated to bet regularly on sports, and a total of 370 million desi bettors around prominent sporting events, as per data from one of the latest reports by Esse N Videri, Meghalaya is set to reach out and take a piece of a vast market.

Estimates on the financial value of India’s sports betting market, combined across all types of offline channels and online sports and cricket predictions and betting platforms, speak about amounts between $130 and $150 billion (roughly between ₹9.7 and ₹11.5 lakh crore).

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Delhi are shown to deliver the highest number of bettors and Meghalaya can count on substantial tourists flow from their betting circles. The sports betting communities of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also not to be underestimated.

Among the sports, cricket is most popular, registering 68 percent of the total bet count analyzed by Esse N Videri. Football takes second position with 11 percent of the bets, followed by betting on FIFA at 7 percent and on eCricket at 5 percent. The last position in the Top 5 of popular sports for betting in India is taken by tennis with 3 percent of the bet count.

Local Citizens will Still have Their Teer Betting

Meghalaya residents will still be permitted to participate in teer betting over arrow-shooting results. Teer is a traditional method of gambling, somewhat similar to a lottery draw, and held under the rules of the Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets Act, 2018.

Teer includes bettors wagering on the number of arrows that reach the target which is placed about 50 meters away from a team of 20 archers positioned in a semicircle.

The archers shoot volleys of arrows at the target for ten minutes, and players place their bets choosing a number between 0 and 99 trying to guess the last two digits of the number of arrows that successfully pierce the target.

If, for example, the number of hits is 256, anyone who has bet on 56 wins an amount eight times bigger than their wager.
