Putting money where its mouth is, or gold in this case, the Siddhivinayak temple deposited a total of 44kg of gold in the Prime Minister’s ambitious gold monetisation scheme, just like the temple trust had announced in December last year.

Narendra Patil, chairman, Siddhivinayak temple, said, “The melting of gold will be done at a government mint. The temple will annually earn 2.25 per cent interest on the gold deposited with the bank.” According to the authorities, the gold was deposited in one of the State of Bank of India branches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the scheme with the objective of increasing gold reserves as India is one of the foremost importers of the yellow metal.

Going by a rough estimate, the temple is likely to earn a monthly interest of over Rs 10 lakh from the bank under the scheme. “The additional revenue generated will be utilised to enhance existing charity work like dialysis, assistance to needy medical patients and students,” Sanjeev Patil, chief executive officer of the temple trust said.

The Siddhivinayak temple’s current gold reserve stands at a staggering 171kg. It already has 10 kg of this deposited with the State Bank of India in exchange of an annual interest of 1 per cent. “We have requested the bank to add this gold to the monetisation scheme too. If the request is accepted than our gold pledge will amount to 54 kg,” a temple source said.
