Strong Australia eyeing to win their first world cup

It cannot be denied that he Aussies have ruled the cricketing world for a major part of the 21st century. But it is surprising to know that having played in five editions of the T20 World Cup, it has not won it. With the player’s retiring one after the other it is commendable that the Aussies have only raised their performance to an all new level. The current team has rightly fitted into the shoes of the legends and has impressively carried itself well in their transformation phase.

The Aussies have made their name in international cricket as a team who is always playing to win. They have it in their instinct and are a master of putting pressure on the opposition by playing their ferocious brand of cricket. Steve Smith has been a run machine this season and has nicely set up an example for the team. They come into the tournament high in confidence with the latest series win against South Africa.

The batting line-up looks consolidated and can tear apart the bowling line up of any team.  David Warner is a destructive customer and his ability to score quickly can take the game away from the opposition. Aaron Finch is another player who has lots of runs for his team at the team. Both the openers complement each other well. Mitchell Marsh, Maxwell, Shane Watson are middle order batsman who are capable of hitting some might blows. All in all the batting looks pretty solid.

With Johnson’s untimely retirement, the team has lost an experienced wicket taking bowler. And Mitchell Starc’s absence due to injury has given a blow to Australia’s hopes of winning the Twenty20 World Cup. Coulter-Nile, Faulkner and Tye have done well but will have to continue doing so. From Faulkner in particular, the team will have lots of expectation. He is a handy customer with the bat and can contribute with the bat as well at the end. Spin could be their weak point with the absence of experience. Zampa has been a good find, though only time will tell how well he can do at the tournament. The not so good record of the Kangaroos in sub continental conditions may hamper their campaign. Ashton Agar has also been included into the squad. The fielding of the side has been absolutely brilliant.

AUSTRALIA’S WORLD T20 SQUAD: Steve Smith (c), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Andrew Tye, Shane Watson, Adam Zampa

Sunil Gavaskar gives his opinion of GT allrounder Rahul Tewatia

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
