T20 WORLD Cup special: Mere coincidence or stats to check out for?

Another season of ICC World Cup T20 2016 is all set to commence and we have for you few interesting stats to check out for so as to get a flash back of the teams who won the previous tournaments.

Since the year 2009 there has been a unique pattern which shows that the team who hosted the tournament was not the winner in the end but was the crown holder in the next edition of the T20 World Cup.

To begin with, in the year 2009 it was England who was hosting the tournament but the winner of the tournament was Pakistan.

In the next year 2010 the host was West Indies and England emerged out as the winner of the tournament who was also the host of the previous season.

Two years later in the year 2012, Sri Lanka was hosting the World Cup T20 and this time it was West Indies who clinched the crown and as per the pattern again they were the hosts of the previous edition of the World Cup tournament.

In the year 2014 Bangladesh was hosting the tournament and Sri Lanka was the winner of the World Cup T20. If we go by the pattern that the teams who hosted the tournament won it the very next season then this year might be the year for Bangladesh to come up with a surprise performance against some of the top teams and clinch the T20 World Cup title.

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
