Ronaldo receives record fourth Golden Boot

Madrid: Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo received his record fourth Golden Boot award on Tuesday after becoming the highest scorer in Europe’s domestic leagues last season.

No other player has won it four times in the game’s hisory.

Ronaldo netted 48 goals in 35 La Liga matches last season. It was his third Golden Boot playing for Spanish giants Real Madrid. His other award was for English side Manchester United in 2007-08.

The 30-year-old was accompanied at the awards ceremony by his mother and his son. Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez, club president Florentino Perez also graced the event.

Ronaldo recently became Madrid’s all-time leading scorer, overtaking legend Raul Gonzalez with 324 goals, marca.com reported on Tuesday.

Ronaldo was ecstatic to have won the award for the fourth time and promised to fight for more.

“I want to thank everyone who has come today, the Portuguese ambassador, my manager, my president, those from Real Madrid and the fans.”

“This is a beautiful moment in my sporting life. To receive the fourth Golden Shoe is an honour and a privilege. This trophy is very important for me and I have to thank my teammates and everyone who has helped me.”

“It’s a special moment but I’m not satisfied. I want to be more. I want the fifth and the sixth if it’s possible. I know it is difficult,” he added.

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
