During the stretch of two years, GMCH records zero cases for the first time

For the first time in the two year stretch of the pandemic, the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital(GMCH) records zero cases. Amid the declining number of cases, the  GMCH was never downright free of the admission of new Covid patients.

The principal cum chief Superintendent of the college, Dr. Achyut Baishya, affirmed that there were few cases reported in the the difunctional Kalapahar Covid Care Facility. The facility was under the command of GMCH. The cases were purported last year, when the second wave was abiding and the third wave hit the state.

Baishya quoted, “We discharged a baby from the pediatric ICU on Friday, and today there was no Covid case in GMCH. The baby turned Covid negative on Friday morning. For the first time, we spent a day without a single Covid patient at GMCH.”

He added that by Thursday the number was reduced to two.  “An elderly Covid patient was shifted to a hospital ward from the ICU on Thursday and got discharged by  night,” he concluded. Over 10,000 patients were confabulated in GMCH and other health care facilities since the first wave of Covid.

According to the Health Department Officials, the number of patients being treated in hospitals is less than 50. They also stated that on Friday, the number of active cases in the state was 996 and the recovery rate increased positively to 98.77%. According to the reports, Assam registered the first case on March 31, 2020.

Assam National Health Mission Director(NHM), Dr. Lakshmanan, reported that only 45 Covid patients were being confabulated in different hospitals in the state at present. In the Urban district, the test positivity rate has been around 1%.

The NHM Director concluded by saying, “The Covid situation has significantly improved. At present only eight Covid patients are on ventilation support and that, too, because of other complications related to Covid. However, we are keeping an alert.”

Covid toll in Karnataka is a worrying sign for state government

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.

Health experts said that the mutated Coronavirus is losing its fierce characteristics as vaccination, better treatment facilities and awareness among the people have contributed to the lesser number of Covid deaths.

During the 4th and 6th of April two deaths were reported in Bengaluru, one in Gadag district on April 8, two deaths were reported from Belagavi and Vijayapura on April 30. The first Covid case was reported in the state in March 2020 and three Covid deaths were recorded in the month.
