India on the brink of facing third Covid wave? Country sees 58,097 new cases, 534 deaths in 24 hours

The number of daily COVID-19 cases continued to rise in India as the country recorded 58,097 new infections in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Wednesday (January 5, 2022) morning.

While the daily positivity rate has now increased to 4.18%, the weekly positivity rate has mounted to 2.60%.

With this, the country’s active coronavirus caseload has also now jumped to 2,14,004.

India’s death toll also rose by 534 in the last 24 hours and currently stands at 4,82,551.

India’s Omicron tally crosses 2,000

The Omicron tally also crossed 2,000 on Tuesday and is now found across 24 states and UTs. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, out of the total 2,135 Omicron infections across India, 828 have been discharged, recovered or migrated

Covid toll in Karnataka is a worrying sign for state government

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.
