KC Cariappa

IPL auction had one unique bid that have raised many questions among the cricketing fans. The name KC Cariappa has been new to the cricket industry but is a big fish when it comes to IPL bidding made by the KKR this season.

KC Cariappa got into the eyes of the selectors in the Karnataka Premier League and was then being purchased for an astonishing amount of 2.4 crore ($400,000) in the IPL 2015 auction.

No one knew about KC Cariappa till he was purchased by the defending IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders. He was purchased at Rs 2.4 crore which is 24 times the amount of his base price and this makes him overpass many of the other senior and talented cricketers.

Konganda Charamanna Cariappa is a 20-year-old leg spinner from Coorg in /Karnataka. He has been tagged as the off-break bowler by the BCCI and the Karnataka State Cricket Association, while in actual he is primarily a leg spinner and has a grip that facilitates him to bowl both off breaks and leg breaks.

He is tall when it comes to height of the spinners that India has produced; he is 5 feet 11 inches tall and with that height bowlers try to be a seam bowler usually. He might get advantage of his height while bowling with an orthodox round-arm action.

Some of the key things that makes this young talent lot different than the other spinners is the stock ball that he is has, not only this but he also has variations like the googly which can deceit the batsman and the faster one that can prove to be a handy trick. He also has one unique quality of bowling off-spinners without changing the grip.

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
