Lucknow, Nov 6 (IANS) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh on Monday named Abhilasha Gupta, the wife of a state Minister, as its mayoral candidate from Allahabad.

The name of Gupta was announced by Mahendra Nath Pandey, the state unit chief of the party.

Abhilasha Gupta is wife of Stamp and Registration Minister Nand Gopal Gupta aka ‘Nandi’. The Minister was for long in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and joined the BJP in the run up to the state assembly elections earlier this year.

The BJP so far has announced the names of 14 mayor candidates for the forthcoming three-phased urban body polls. Two more names – for Bareilly and Firozabad — are yet to be announced but would be done soon, a senior BJP leader told IANS.

Sanyukta Bhatia, was named as the BJP candidate for Lucknow Mayor’s post late on Sunday. Others whose names have been announced include Mukesh Arya Bandhu (Mathura), Rajeev Agarwal (Aligarh), Mridula Jaiswal (Varanasi), Ram Teertha Singhal (Jhansi), Asha Sharma from Ghaziabad, Sanjeev Walia from Saharanpur and Vinod Agarwal from Moradabad.

The BJP instead of putting its stakes on young blood has chosen time-tested veterans for the crucial urban body polls, which are the first litmus test for the BJP since it stormed to power with a massive majority earlier this year.

Uttar Pradesh will witness three-phase civic polls on November 22, 26 and 29. Counting will be held on December 1.
