More than 83,000 fresh cases were registered in last 24 hour. While the overall figure stood at 3,853,406, the death toll also increased from 66,333 to 67,376.
With 1,023 fresh deaths, India’s cumulative toll reached 67,415.

Maharashtra alone accounts for 37% of the figure. Tamil Nadu — which reported 98 fresh deaths on Wednesday taking the state’s toll to 7,516 — has the second-highest Covid toll in the country after Maharashtra.

Karnataka, another badly affected state in the south, reported 113 deaths, pushing the state’s total toll close to the 6,000-mark at 5,950.

Even though Karnataka recorded the lowest number of Covid deaths in April since the virus struck first in 2020, the state is recording a rise in the positivity rate (1.50 per cent). Five people died from the Covid infections in April as per the statistics released by the state health department. In March, the positivity rate stood around 0.53 per cent. In the first week of April it came down to 0.38 per cent, second week registered 0.56 per cent, third week it rose to 0.79 per cent and by end of April the Covid positivity rate touched 1.19 per cent.
