Researchers will now be able to restore Woolly Mammoths

Do you remember the ‘Jurassic Park’ movie? Well, it’s not about the collections it made after it was released. The scientists are now working on extinction-reversing technology to bring back extinct species to life just like the researchers did in the movie and re-established the entire dinosaur species. It won’t be a science fiction movie anymore, the reality will soon touch the ground and we might see our woolly Mammoths walking again in the jungles which were died 10,000 years ago. The researchers are trying to resurrect the 11 foot tall Mammoth through this technology.

University of California’s ecology, evolution, and marine biology professor, Dr. Douglas McCauley has said that the researchers are closer than ever before to re-install the habitat of the extinct animal. He said, “We are closer now than ever before to being able to raise species from the dead. But it’s important to understand what are and are not able to do with de-extinction technology.” He added that the researchers could start the process of restoring the species as early as this year through the cloning process where the DNA Sequence will be used.

Researchers are now trying to extract high-quality DNA genome from preserved specimens. However, it’s not that easy to extract the DNA of an animal that died thousands of years ago. It gets damaged over the years. However, researchers have extracted the DNA samples from a horse which was killed and preserved for 700,000 years in permafrost. The researchers will inject the DNA samples to a living elephant as a surrogate that will either give birth to the hairy Mammoth or any other species that might form with the fusion of the injected DNA and the surrogate elephant’s DNA. However, this process won’t form the exact photocopy of the species but it is believed that the product of the fusion will be similar to the extinct species resembling some of its significant characters. DNA samples of ancient species have troubled the researchers to find a suitable surrogate to inject the samples and do reproduction process.
