India post 417, lead by 134 runs vs England till lunch

Mohali: India were bowled out for 417 runs in their first innings, taking a lead of 134 against England at tea on the third day of the third cricket Test here on Monday.Leftie all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja produced a career-best Test score of 90 to pull India to a sizeable lead. Jayant Yadav scored 55 at the Punjab Cricket Association I.S. Bindra stadium here.

Resuming the second session at 354/7, Jadeja and Jayant continued their good touch until the Saurashtra batsman was dismissed by leg-spinner Adil Rashid in the 124th over. His 170-ball knock was laced with 10 boundaries and one six.The fall of Jadeja’s wicket brought in Umesh Yadav (12), who along with Jayant forged a crucial 33-run partnership for the ninth wicket before Jayant was sent back to the pavilion by pacer Ben Strokes (5/73).

Umesh and Mohammad Shami (1 not out) managed to add only three runs to the total and India folded for 417.Earlier, resuming the day at 270/6, Jadeja’s highest Test score pulled India to a sizeable lead. India scored 84 runs from 30 overs in the morning session of the play losing only a wicket — that of Ravichandran Ashwin (72).For England, pacer Ben Strokes scalped five wickets to become their most successful bowler followed by leggie Adil Rashid (4/118).

The left-handed batsman from Haryana is garnering praise from all quarters for the way he’s finishing games regularly in the most exciting IPL season.

Gavaskar reckons Tewatia’s whirlwind knock in Sharjah (in IPL 2020) where he smashed West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over, gave him the confidence that he belongs to the big stage.

Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant.”

Gavaskar has also nicknamed the 28-year-old cricketer the ‘ice-man’ and lauded Tewatia’s ability to remain unruffled during the tense moments.
