Pune: Thalassemia affected kids will now be getting the the free iron chelation therapy, a lifeline for thalassemia patients by the state.Dr Girish Chaudhari stated: “Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder where red blood cells that carry oxygen are self destroyed. That's why affected patients need frequent blood transfusion. But such people require less amount of iron than normal people. “During transfusion, excess iron is received. To remove excess iron, they need to undergo iron chelation therapy, which will now be provided for free by the state government, " he added further.“The iron chelation therapy and other check-ups take considerable amount of time. This period can be physically and mentally painful for affected patients and hence we have decided to open free daycare centres for the convenience of patients, " Chaudhari further stated.
